All about 3M

3M is an American corporation that manufactures and distributes industrial, home, and office supplies. It was originally named the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company. Today “3M” is the official and legal name of the company.

Headquartered in St. Paul’s suburb of Maplewood, this innovative company’s employees create products for many industries, including construction, aerospace, defense, metal fabrication, woodworking, countertop fabrication, manufacturing, and healthcare.

A long history of innovation

3M was founded in Two Harbors, Minnesota, which rests on the northern shore of Lake Superior in northern Minnesota in 1902. Dr. J. Danley Budd, Henry. S. Bryan, William A. McGonagle, John Dwan, and Hermon W. Cable are credited with having founded the company together.

Since its inception, the company has revolutionized sandpaper, developed masking tape (something we take for granted these days), mass-distributed sticky notes, and created a product to protect fabrics. The team also helped launch new products to help in the war effort during WW II.

During COVID, the company’s personal protective equipment (PPE) was in high demand. Healthcare workers and first responders were given priority as they dealt with patients and those needing care. To help more people and the government, the company ramped up production to save more lives.

Well-known brands

3M brands are quite literally household names. Any time you grab a piece of tape, chances are good it’s Scotch tape. When you add a sticky note to save information on your book, you might be grabbing a Post-it note. 3M owns more than 30 brands, including Scotch, Scotch-Brite, Scotchgard, and Post-it.

A vast array of products

3M currently offers a vast assortment of products — more than 60,000 — while serving numerous industries. Their products include:

  • Abrasives
  • Adhesives
  • Building materials
  • Coatings
  • Coating and finishing spray equipment
  • Polishes
  • Electrical supplies

Our highlights

It’s impossible to name every product, but we can highlight a few of our favorites ….

Green masking tape

3m green masking tape

Extremely popular, 3M Green Masking Tape is a product built on durable yet easy-to-use crepe paper, which allows for swift and accurate tearing. This UV-resistant tape was designed specifically for high sunlight exposure; it’s ideal for outdoor paint masking, temporary use on outdoor signs, and protecting various items during paint and construction projects. It also serves in many capacities as regular tape.

Our customers love it for its ease of use, versatility, durability, and affordability.

Xtract sanding system

Sanding is an important phase for various manufacturing processes. 3M has created “clean sanding” with the Xtract sanding system, which enhances product surfaces while creating a clean working environment. The system uses extraction holes throughout the sanding surface to remove 99% of all dust, resulting in a cleaner work environment without sacrificing product quality.

It’s a great solution to prevent dust from impacting your workforce’s health.

VHB tape

Standing for “Very High Bond,” 3M’s VHB tape is a two-sided adhesive that has been serving users since 1980. It was originally used to secure panels to ambulance frames, a clear demonstration of this product’s incredible bonding strength. The tape is now used in numerous automotive, furniture, and industrial applications.

Performance Industrial Spray Gun HVLP System – (26878)

This durable system was built for industrial painters. It’s lightweight, making it easy to carry and ensuring a consistent spray. The spray gun’s trigger was optimized by kinesiologists to increase ease of use, preventing hands from getting tired and impacting a finish. This system is also versatile, spraying from a pressurized source or a gravity cup. Adding to its versatility, replaceable nozzles enable you to change sprays and make clean-up easier.

What are hook and loop as well as reclosable fasteners?

Hook and loop fasteners as well as reclosable fasteners secure things. Haven’t heard of this technology? You probably have! You may know this fastener style by a brand name: Velcro. Like “Kleenex” many people confuse tissues and Kleenex. (Hand me a Kleenex!) In the same way, people also use Velco and hook and loop or reclosable fasteners interchangeably.

The history of Velcro

hook and loop fasteners

The Smithsonian indicates a Swiss engineer named George de Mastral was walking with his dog when he noticed burrs were stuck in his clothing and to his pup. Intrigued by how the burrs clung to fabrics and hair, he examined them under a microscope. To his surprise, they had tiny hooks that attached themselves to loops in the fabric of his clothes. Inspired, he thought they had practical uses in manufacturing and decided to create them himself.

After years of experimentation and development, de Mestral patented his invention in 1955, and called it “Velcro” (a combination of the French words for velvet and crochet). The Velcro fastening system quickly gained popularity and found a wide range of applications in various industries.

Since that time, other companies have created their own version of “Velcro.” However, the brand name is owned by Velcro IP Holdings LLC and trades as Velcro Companies, a privately held company in the UK.

Why are hook and loop as well as recloseable fasteners used?

According to 3M, one of the leading suppliers of this technology, hook and loop and reclosable fasteners are great for people who need closure to go on easily but securely, be conformable to your part shape, and stay closed until you’re ready for it to easily peel open. Here are just a few reasons people choose hook and loop fasteners for their projects.

  1. Ease to use. Hook and loop fasteners are simple to use. They consist of two components: tiny hooks and small loops. Pushing the two components together creates a secure and temporary bond, and pulling them apart releases it. This simplicity makes them accessible to people of all ages and abilities. It’s why they’re used on medical devices, such as leg braces.
  2. Reusability. Hook and loop fasteners are designed for multiple uses. They can be opened and closed repeatedly without impacting the effectiveness of the hold. This reusability makes them ideal for applications where you need to attach and detach items frequently.
  3. No other tools are required saving time and resources. Unlike traditional fasteners such as screws, nails, tapes, or adhesives, hook and loop fasteners don’t require hardware for installation. This saves time and eliminates the need for drilling holes or using adhesives that can damage surfaces.
  4. Versatility. Hook and loop fasteners are available in various sizes, strengths, and colors, making them versatile for different applications. Industries such as clothing, footwear, automotive, aerospace, and healthcare all use hook and loop.
  5. Safety. In some applications, particularly in child and medical products, hook and loop fasteners are preferred because they eliminate the risk of sharp edges or protruding parts. That reduces the likelihood of injuries and ensures children and medical products are safe.
  6. Temperature and chemical resistance. Depending on the specific type and brand, hook and loop fasteners can be resistant to various environmental factors, including temperature extremes and chemicals.

Who uses them?

Everyone. No doubt, you’ve used hook and loop or reclosable fasteners in your personal life. As noted above, many industries from aerospace to healthcare to textiles use hook-and-loop technology as well as recloseable fasteners. And they’re used on products from purses and shoes to transportation seating and signage.

Types and brands

There are varying types of hook and loop as well as recloseable fasteners from a number of suppliers. Here are just a few of our favorites by the trait.

For strength, 3M has Dual Lock (see right), which provides more strength than other brands. 3M uses “mushroom heads” for what they indicate is “5x the tensile strength of hook and loop fasteners.” It also mates to itself, so you don’t have to worry about which side you’re using for your project. Despite how well it holds, this technology can still be pulled apart without hardware. These come in a variety of colors and sizes.

3M also provides Scotchmate Hook and Loop, which is strong but can be sewn into textiles or uses adhesives to secure it to surfaces.

There are flame-resistant (with or without adhesive) options, including the SJ3419FR (Hook) and SJ3418FR (Loop). There are even high-performance choices that hold up under extreme conditions, such as SJ3572 (Hook) and SJ3571 (Loop).

For just about any need, there’s a fastener you can use!

Elevated can help with hook and loop fasteners

As with most projects, hook and loop fasteners may not be right for you. Of course, your project’s purpose and goals weigh into whether you use them and which type you use. Elevated carries a wide array to meet the needs of your project. We have industrial solutions specialists who can help you decide if it’s right for your company, and which brand and option to get.

Why 3M Green Masking Tape rocks

Created for advanced UV resistance and a firm hold for up to two weeks, 3M Green Masking Tape is quickly becoming a customer favorite.

Why is it so popular? It has the advanced features that painting, finishing, and construction professionals love …. It’s versatile and it’s affordable (more affordable than the “blue” painter’s tape). It’s why we’re recommending this tape over others.

What makes this tape so effective?

Easy to tear and hold

The carrier material for 3M Green Masking Tape is crepe paper. This durable yet easy-to-use paper allows for swift tearing. No knives or special equipment are needed, making the work process simpler. The crepe paper also assists in unwinding, with a controlled unwinding process that prevents slivering.

UV resistant

3m green masking tape

One of the top features of this tape is the UV resistance. This tape has been specifically engineered for use in areas where sun exposure is expected. This may include outdoor paint masking, holding outdoor signs, and protecting a variety of items during painting and construction.

Removes cleanly

This product uses a rubber-based adhesive that provides clean, hassle-free removal while still holding strong whenever required. The tape removes cleanly from almost all surfaces and leaves no edge residue. That strength with easy removal is ideal for surface protection and painting.

For painters, it peels cleanly, leaving sharp, crisp lines. Not only does it remove cleanly, it does so after 14 days, enabling you to get the highest level of performance from the tape.

Built for a variety of materials

This tape has the right features and characteristics to be used in a wide variety of substrates, including wood and metal.

Affordable

3M Green Masking Tape costs less than blue painter’s tape as well as many other masking tapes. It’s especially a bargain because it has many different uses, including working on multiple substrates. So far, construction staff have loved this tape.

Available in seven different widths

Different users have different needs, so 3M has created this tape in a variety of widths. This versatility is an added benefit to using the product. 3M Green Masking Tape is currently available in these widths:

  • 12 mm
  • 18 mm
  • 24 mm
  • 36 mm
  • 48 mm
  • 72 mm
  • 96 mm

Uses

There are many uses for 3M Green Masking Tape. Flooring and construction professionals use it for surface protection (such as recycled, corrugated cardboard) without worrying about residue left behind by other masking tapes. The hold is secure, too.

Painters and contractors who coat and finish items can use it as a cheaper alternative to painting tape, especially if they’re painting outdoors. No bleeding!

VHB tape by 3M – a great bonding experience

vhb tape on an edge

One of the unsung heroes in Elevated Industrial Solutions, formerly know as Lane Supply Company’s, cadre of products is a tape – VHB Tape by 3M. It’s quick bonding and versatile making it a great tool for a variety of industries. Although it’s certainly gaining popularity, some trades are learning more about it and how to take advantage of it, showcasing their designs without unappealing fasteners.

In this brief article, we cover what VHB Tape is, a few tricks about it, and why you may want to use it.

What is VHB Tape?

VHB stands for Very High Bond. It’s two-sided tape that holds things together securely.

The tape was created in 1980 by Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company (3M). According to 3M’s history, it was first used to secure panels to ambulance frames.

This tape is used for a variety of reasons and on myriad surfaces, including …

  • Plastics
  • Metal (coated and non-coated)
  • Glass (coated and non-coated)
  • Polyolefin (HDPEs and some LDPEs)

It comes in various sizes, colors, and can be die-cut into custom shapes too.

Why use VHB Tape?

The primary reasons most people use this tape are convivence of application and structural bonding (application-specific). But it does more than just stick – it’s …

  • Perfect for areas where screws or rivets aren’t ideal
  • A sealant, enabling products to be waterproof
  • Chemical- and corrosion-resistant (application-specific)
  • Mess-free, unlike glue
  • Durable
  • Able to reduce production time needed to assemble
  • Easy to use
  • Cosmetically appealing (because you can’t see it – it’s seamless) enabling you to showcase your design

It’s why OEM equipment, custom vehicle, metal fabricators, electronic part manufacturers, etc., use the tape on things from construction projects to showerheads to mobile devices (such as the cell phone shown on the left).

Why not use the solution?

No solution is absolutely perfect for every job. And for VHB Tape there are lots of options. Contact Elevated for help in determining which tape is right for your project, including whether VHB Tape can be used.

How to apply the tape

Since one of the biggest issues is securing the tape, we wanted to share with you some ideas about how to ensure a better (more secure) fit. There are a variety of things you can do to ensure the tape is applied correctly, providing a longer-lasting bond.

  • Clean the surface with 50/50 alcohol and water mix or use 3M’s VHB Tape Primer. Using 3M’s Tape primers provides an extra benefit of working as an adhesion promoter on difficult to bond substrates like ABS, PET, Polypropylene, and others.
  • Use tools to add the tape and pressure for more accuracy. Some of the tools that help the most include:
    • Hand-tape applicator
    • Laminator
    • J roller

Which industries use VHB Tape?

You’d be surprised. Because the tape is so versatile, it’s used by many different industries. In fact, businesses that need to adhere a surface to another might want to include VHB Tape for their projects.

As an example, the logo of the car manufacturer (e.g., Ford) may be on your car using VHB Tape. Your horse trailer or your kiddo’s scooter may be using VHB tape. You may even have VHB Tape adhering things in your plant, house, or office right now.

How do you know if VHB Tape is right for you?

At Elevated, we specialize in helping companies understand the products that can help save time and money while improving quality. In fact, we’ve been doing so for more than 60 years.
